Common questions

Do I need a permit to renovate a bathroom in Toronto?

It depends on the work. A building permit is generally needed when a renovation involves structural changes or adding or moving plumbing. Replacing fixtures and finishes in the same locations usually does not need one. Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor, who arranges any electrical permit through the Electrical Safety Authority. Rules change, so your contractor or the City of Toronto should confirm for your project.

What does a steam shower need?

A steam shower needs a fully sealed enclosure including the ceiling, a vapour barrier, careful waterproofing and slope, a steam generator with its own electrical supply, and good ventilation. We specify all of this in the drawings so your contractor can price it up front. Our primary bathroom project in Toronto includes an oversized steam shower.

Can we replace the tub with a shower?

Yes, it is one of the most common bathroom changes. We check the space, the drain location and the waterproofing, and design the shower so it feels generous rather than squeezed in. Some owners prefer to keep one tub in the home for future buyers, and we will talk that through with you.

Can you design a small powder room?

Yes. Small rooms leave no space for mistakes, so they get the same planning as a larger bathroom: layout, tile, vanity, lighting and hardware designed together. Our Pattern Perfect powder room is an example of how much a small room can carry.
